A Guide For Buying Your First Home

A home buyers guide to help you along the journey of home buying. Buying a home for the first time is incredibly exciting. It's also completely terrifying and at times, incredibly overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be that way.

The more information and knowledge you have, the easier it is to know exactly what your next steps are. That's how you get through everything. Not by focusing on the whole of the project, but merely by knowing only what your next step is.

So here is a home buyers guide to finding your first house. Step one is to take a deep breath. Step two is to finish reading this.

A Buyers Guide Starts With Writing Down What You Want In a Home

Before you can find your dream home, you need to know what you want and need in a home. This will save you a lot of time. Don't be afraid to make changes as you go, but writing down what you want ahead of time will help you get the process started.

Don't forget to include price, location, and age of your dream home. This is a place you're going to call home for a long time so don't be afraid to ask for exactly what you want. In the meantime, start saving your money!

Get Your Paperwork In Order

Paperwork will be involved in the home buying process. Even if you pay cash, some amount of paperwork would need to be done. So you might as well get it organized before you start your search. It will make things much less stressful.

Here are the documents you'll need to start the process:

  • Tax Returns
  • W2's
  • Bank Statements
  • Driver's License or Photo ID
  • Credit Report

Hire a Real Estate Agent

Once you have your dream home wish list and your documents ready, it's time to find a great real estate agent. But don't just pick the first one you see on Google and assume they'll be a great match. Here's how to find a great real estate agent:

  • Ask friends and family
  • Check out social media for recommendations

Make sure you like and trust your real estate agent. They should be professional and committed to helping you find your home. Lastly, make sure they work within your price range.

Find a Mortgage Lender

Congratulations! You have found your dream home. Now you need to get a mortgage. But luckily, you have already compiled a lot of information they'll be requesting, so you'll be fine!

Repeat the same process you used to find your real estate agent. Your mortgage lender should be professional, communicate well with you, and happy to guide you through the home buying process.

Hire These Professionals

Of course, when you're buying a house, the real estate agent and mortgage lender aren't the only two professionals involved. You also should be working with the following professionals:

  • Loan Officer
  • Home Inspector
  • Home Appraiser
  • Insurance Agent
  • Title Company or Lawyer

The last step? Move!
